Call for Papers: Public Aspects of Private Law

Introduction

The Private Law Junior Scholars Conference is a collaboration between the law faculties of the University of Toronto and Tel Aviv University. It provides doctoral candidates, post-doctoral researchers and junior faculty (pre-tenure) with a unique opportunity to present their work and receive meaningful feedback from senior faculty members and peers.

Each session will start with a presentation by the author (40 minutes), followed by the commentator’s remarks by a faculty member. The author will respond to the remarks, and then the remainder of the session will be dedicated to Q&A.

Conference Theme

This year’s Private Law Junior Scholars Conference will assess the possible public aspects of private law. In what way – if at all – does private law have public aspects? Is there a strict divide between private law and public law, and if so where should the line be drawn? Could the contours of private law be delineated separately from other fields of law?

In trying to find answers to these questions, we invite papers that explore issues of both a substantive and procedural nature, adopting different theoretical and methodological vantage points in approaching the overall conference topic. Topics for individual presentations and papers could include, but are not limited to: (1) private law and the state; (2) exercise of public powers through private law; (3) private law remedies for constitutional wrongs; (4) distributive aspects of private law;

(5) public limitations on the exercise of private law; (6) minorities rights and private law.

Submission and Selection

We invite abstracts of up to 800 words as well as a short CV to be sent to pljsconference@gmail.com, by April 30, 2018. The abstract should outline the paper’s hypothesis, its main arguments and objectives. Submissions will be evaluated based on their quality, their relevance to the theme, and the interest they present in relation to other proposals. Applicants will be notified of results no later than May 21, 2018.

The selected presenters will be asked to send their full papers (of no more than 15,000 words, footnotes included) and a short biography of up to 150 words by September 2, 2018.

Eligibility

Doctoral candidates, post-doctoral researchers and pre-tenure junior faculty (of up to 5 years from appointment) are eligible to apply. Submissions of unpublished work are welcomed. Papers that have been accepted for publication, but have not been published, will also be considered.

Financial Assistance

The conference organizers may allocate limited financial support to cover reasonable travel and accommodation costs for presenters. Together with the notification of acceptance, presenters will receive a financial aid request form. Only presenters who submit this form on time (as indicated in the acceptance notification) may be considered for financial aid. Kindly note, we may not be able to offer full recovery of expenses. We, therefore, strongly encourage presenters to seek external financial support.
