This workshop for early-career and aspiring academics focused on key aspects of building a successful scholarly career. Drawing on extensive editorial experience—including 17 years as Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of International Law (EJIL) and long-standing involvement with the International Journal of Constitutional Law (ICON), as well as service on the editorial boards of approximately twenty legal journals—the session examined strategies for preparing and positioning articles to enhance their prospects of acceptance in leading peer-reviewed (Tier One) journals.

The workshop also addressed approaches to developing meaningful and coherent individual research agendas, with particular attention to framing questions, sustaining long-term projects, and cultivating scholarly distinctiveness. Finally, it offered reflections on effective teaching, informed by over four decades of classroom experience, considering how to engage students, structure courses, and integrate research and pedagogy in a mutually reinforcing manner.
